It 's a highly prized truffle tradition in parts of Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Marche and Molise, despite having a market value lower than the white truffle.
Externally it can be confused with Tuber Magnum, because originally it shows the same characteristics, irregular, smooth and white but when dirty matures it becomes darker. Even the serfs from initially clear darkens.
The smell is the characteristic that distinguishes it from the white truffle, because if the top is soft and pleasant later becomes aglioso nauseante.Cresce and in limestone soils, often in hardwoods and conifers.
